The United States has expressed doubts about whether Kyiv has the ability to drive out Russian troops from its territory this year.

Hopes Ukraine will launch a massive spring offensive to reclaim occupied territory seized by Moscow were dealt a major blow on Friday after Western leaders refused to commit to providing Ukraine’s army with much-needed tanks.

At a security meeting held in Germany to discuss the Ukraine war, US General Mark Milley said it would be “very, very difficult” to eject Putin”s army from “every inch of Russian-occupied Ukraine”.

His comments come as Ukraine’s military confirmed its forces had wiped out a Wagner ammunition dump and headquarters in Soledar in the hotly contested Donbas.

The 45th Separate Artillery Brigade released a video showing the strike and its aftermath.

A spokesperson for Ukraine’s military said: “The headquarters and field warehouse of the Wagner mercenaries in Soledar were destroyed.”

German refusal to send tanks to Ukraine will cost lives, warns Polish Foreign Minister

Poland’s Foreign Minister has blasted Germany for its dithering over sending tanks to Ukraine.

Zbigniew Rau said Ukrainian lives would be lost because of Germany’s reluctance to act.

In a tweet he wrote: “Arming Ukraine in order to repel the Russian aggression is not some kind of decision-making exercise. Ukrainian blood is shed for real.

“This is the price of hesitation over Leopard deliveries. We need action, now.”

His comments come in the wake of a security meeting attended by Nato members in Ramstein on Friday.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky had hoped a decisive decision would be made on the provision of German-made Leopard tanks to Kyiv’s army.

Instead, Boris Pistorius, Berlin’s new Defence Minister, said on the sidelines of the 50-nation meeting at the Ramstein US air force base, that he had asked his ministry to “undertake an examination of the stocks” of the tanks available.

President Zelensky has pleaded with NATO members to equip his army with tanks to help Ukraine drive Putin’s army out of his country.

The Ukrainian President had hoped that Germany would give the green light to the delivery of its Leopard tanks at a security meeting yesterday in Ramstein.

However, Berlin continues to dither and has so far refused to make any commitments on the burning issue.

Lloyd Austin, the US Defence Secretary, told the meeting that this was a “decisive moment for Ukraine’s ability to defend itself” and praised Britain’s decision to send its tanks.

He said: “The UK has announced a significant donation of Challenger 2 tanks. We commend our British allies for this decision.”
